Eating Out

Lübeck's food is northern German: fish, potatoes, rye bread, dark beer, and the city's own marzipan. Smoked herring (Räucheraal eel as well), Labskaus (the sailor's hash of corned beef, herring, beetroot and fried egg), and Lübecker Schwalbennester (rolled veal stuffed with hard-boiled egg) all appear on traditional menus.

For everyday eating, the streets around the Markt and along Hüxstraße have everything from old-style German restaurants to modern bistros. The harbour side along An der Untertrave has a row of fish restaurants and brewpubs facing the water.
