Lübeck Synagogue

Restored nineteenth-century synagogue and rare surviving Jewish landmark in Lübeck’s old town.

Lübeck Synagogue is one of the old town's quieter but more important historic sites. Built in the nineteenth century and later altered, damaged, and restored through a difficult twentieth-century history, it stands as a rare visible marker of Jewish life in a city better known for brick Gothic churches and Hanseatic merchants.

It is not a casual drop-in attraction in the way the Holstentor or St Mary's are, and access may depend on services, security, or community arrangements. Even from the outside, the building is worth noticing while walking near St Annen and the southern old town, because it adds a necessary layer to Lübeck's otherwise postcard-perfect medieval story.
