Willy Brandt-Haus

Museum to the former chancellor born in Lübeck, with the desk from his Berlin office

Address Königstraße 21

Willy Brandt (1913–1992), West German chancellor between 1969 and 1974 and Nobel Peace laureate for his eastern reconciliation policy (Ostpolitik), was born in Lübeck and grew up here as the son of an unmarried shop assistant. The Forum on Königstraße tells his life in straightforward chronological displays: Lübeck childhood, exile in Norway and Sweden, mayoralty of West Berlin during the building of the Wall, the chancellorship, the famous Kniefall in Warsaw in 1970.

Entry is free. The English audio guide is excellent. Best paired with the nearby Günter Grass-Haus — both writers were close friends and the museums share a tone of post-war reckoning.
