Schleswig City Museum

Local history museum in a historic courtyard ensemble

The Schleswig City Museum occupies the Günderorthsche Hof, a handsome ensemble of historical buildings in the Friedrichsberg district, south of the old town. The museum covers the history of the city from the medieval period through the 20th century, with particular attention to the complex Danish-German identity of this border region. There are collections of decorative arts, furniture, and documents relating to the town's role as a royal residence and administrative centre.

It's a smaller, quieter museum than Schloss Gottorf — better for those who want to understand Schleswig as a place rather than as an archaeological site. The building itself is part of the appeal: the courtyard has remained largely unchanged for several centuries.
