Kampen Lighthouse

The oldest lighthouse on the German North Sea coast, banded red and white

The Kampen Lighthouse is the oldest active lighthouse on the German North Sea coast — it began operation in 1856. The 39-metre cast-iron tower, painted with broad red and white bands, stands on a low heath above the Rotes Kliff and is visible from much of northern Sylt. Its beam reaches about 40 kilometres out to sea and still guides ships through the shallow waters off the island.

You cannot climb the tower, but the heath around it is a fine stretch of walking and the views from the access road give an obvious context to the building. Combine a visit with a walk along the Rotes Kliff for one of the better short loops on the island.
