Gosch Sylt, List Harbour

The original of the Gosch fish-smokehouse chain, on the harbour at List

Gosch is now a chain with branches across Germany, but the original is the weather-boarded fish smokehouse on the harbour at List — a slightly chaotic complex of bar, restaurant, takeaway counter, and shop, all looking out over the fishing boats. The famous claim to be "Germany's northernmost fish stand" is technically true, since List is Germany's northernmost municipality.

The food is straightforward: smoked salmon and mackerel from the on-site smoker, Fischbrötchen (fish in a bun), shrimp salads, fried fish with potatoes. Eat outside at the wooden tables with a beer or a glass of Riesling, watching the ferry to Rømø come in. It is touristy but the fish is fresh and the setting is the real thing.
