Angermuseum

The main art museum of Erfurt, housed in a handsome Baroque building on the Anger — the city's broad commercial boulevard. The collection covers applied arts and fine arts from the Middle Ages through the 20th century, with particularly strong holdings in medieval carved altarpieces and German painting. The Cranach-era religious works are exceptional.

The Anger itself is worth a stroll: it runs from the train station into the old town and retains some of the grandest 19th-century commercial architecture in Thuringia. The museum is well signed and manages the balance between educating visitors and letting the objects speak for themselves. A few hours here is a good counterpoint to the ecclesiastical architecture elsewhere in the city.
