Eating Out

Weimar eats well for a small city. Thuringian cuisine is hearty and meat-heavy — Thuringer Bratwurst (grilled sausage with mustard), Thuringer Klosse (large potato dumplings), and Sauerbraten are the standards. The local sausages are genuinely good, seasoned with marjoram and grilled over charcoal, and you will find them at stands around the Markt.

The restaurant scene has evolved beyond traditional German fare. A handful of places around the Altstadt serve modern European cooking, and the student population from the Bauhaus University and the Liszt music school keeps a few cheaper, livelier places in business. Prices are significantly lower than in Berlin or Munich.
