Weimar's historic centre is compact enough to walk everywhere. The Altstadt, from the Theaterplatz to the Stadtschloss, takes ten minutes on foot. The Park an der Ilm stretches south from the palace along the river and makes for a pleasant walking route between sights.
City buses run by Stadtwirtschaft Weimar connect the centre with outlying areas. The most useful route is bus line 6 to the Buchenwald Memorial, which runs every thirty minutes from the main bus station (Goetheplatz). The ride takes about fifteen minutes.
There is no tram or metro. Taxis are available at the Hauptbahnhof and can be called by phone. If you want to explore the surrounding countryside — the Ettersberg, the villages along the Ilm valley — renting a car from the train station area is the simplest option, though the regional bus network is serviceable for day trips to Erfurt and Jena.
Cycling is practical on the flatter routes. The Ilmtal-Radweg follows the river valley and connects Weimar with surrounding towns. Bike rental is available from several shops near the station.
