Friedrich Nietzsche lived his final years in this villa on the Humboldtstrasse, cared for by his sister Elisabeth Forster-Nietzsche after his mental collapse in 1889. The interior was redesigned by Henry van de Velde in 1903 in an elegant Art Nouveau style — the furniture, the built-in bookcases, the death mask room — making it a curious hybrid of literary memorial and design showcase.
The archive holds Nietzsche's manuscripts, letters, and personal library. The exhibition addresses both the philosopher's work and the troubled legacy his sister created by manipulating his writings after his death. It is a thoughtful, slightly unsettling place, and the Art Nouveau interiors alone justify a visit. Located a short walk southwest of the Altstadt.
