Andros has one of the best hiking networks in the Cyclades — a series of old kalderimi (stone-paved mule paths) that cross the island's interior, linking villages through valleys watered by natural springs. The island is notably green compared to its neighbours; the walking is gentle enough for families but varied enough to keep serious walkers interested for several days.
The most popular route connects the villages of Apikia and Stenies, passing through the valley of the Pythara waterfalls — a genuine surprise in the Cyclades. Another classic walk links Chora with the village of Mesaria through terraced hillsides and past old Venetian dovecotes (the tower-like stone structures are an Andros speciality). The Andros Routes project has waymarked and signposted most of the main paths. The best walking season is April to June, when the springs are running and the hillsides are still green.
