Museum of Modern Art Andros

The Goulandris Foundation's world-class collection on a quiet Cycladic island

The Museum of Modern Art Andros, operated by the Goulandris Foundation, is one of the finest art museums in Greece — a genuinely surprising find on a quiet Cycladic island. The permanent collection focuses on 20th-century Greek painting and sculpture, with works by Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Yiannis Moralis, and other central figures of modern Greek art. Each summer a major international exhibition brings in works from European and American collections that would more usually appear in Athens or Thessaloniki.

The building is well designed, the galleries are uncrowded, and the setting — in Andros town (Chora) above the sea — is spectacular. Most visitors spend two to three hours. Open May to October; closed Tuesdays.

A story
The Goulandris shipping family chose Andros — their ancestral island — for what became one of Greece's finest modern art museums. When it opened in 1979, it was a shock: serious international and Greek twentieth-century art on an island most visitors had never heard of. The foundation later added a second museum in Athens, but Andros remains the original.
