Benaki Museum

The Benaki Museum, in a fine neoclassical mansion on Vasilissis Sofias just opposite the National Garden, holds the most comprehensive collection of Greek art under one roof — from prehistoric finds through Byzantine icons to the costumes and folk art of the Greek War of Independence. Founded in 1930 by the cotton merchant Antonis Benakis using his private collection, it is arranged chronologically over three floors.

The Byzantine icons are the star of the collection, with works by leading 14th- and 15th-century Cretan painters. The 17th- to 19th-century rooms are stuffed with painted chests, silver jewellery, and reconstructed traditional interiors from across the Greek world. Allow two hours. The roof terrace café has excellent views and good food. Closed Tuesdays.
