Kerameikos

Kerameikos was the main cemetery of ancient Athens, lying just outside the city walls at the start of the road to Eleusis. The name comes from keramos, the potters' quarter that occupied the same district. It is one of the most atmospheric ancient sites in the city — and one of the least visited.

The site preserves a long stretch of the Themistoclean Wall built after the Persian Wars, two great gates (the Dipylon and the Sacred Gate), and several intact funeral monuments along the Street of the Tombs. The small Kerameikos Museum at the entrance holds the original carved grave stelae and offering vessels found on site. Combined ticket includes the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora.

A story
Kerameikos was Athens's largest cemetery for nearly fifteen hundred years — the burial place of statesmen, soldiers, and philosophers. The funeral procession for Pericles passed through here, and the famous funeral oration he gave for the war dead of 431 BCE was probably delivered on these grounds.
