The old Venetian harbour is the centrepiece of Hania — a perfectly preserved 16th-century port with its lighthouse, long stone breakwater, and the great curve of Venetian warehouses and mansions along the waterfront. The Küçük Hasan Pasha Mosque — a domed Ottoman structure built on the harbour front after the Turkish conquest in 1645 — was converted to a market hall and now houses temporary exhibitions.
The harbour is at its best in the late afternoon and at dusk, when the light turns warm and the crowds thin slightly. Walk the full length of the Venetian breakwater to the lighthouse for the view back over the old town and the mountains behind. The restaurants along the harbour front are overpriced relative to the streets inland, but the setting is unbeatable for one evening meal. Most beautiful in the off-season (October–April) when the crowds are gone.
