Hellenistic Theatre

The theatre at Dion dates from the Hellenistic period, making it one of the older surviving theatrical structures in Macedonia. Philip II held dramatic performances here as part of the games he established at Dion in honour of Zeus and the Muses. The games lasted nine days and combined athletic contests with musical performances and theatrical productions.

What survives is the orchestra area and parts of the seating arrangements, set against the lower slopes of the site. The theatre is not as well-preserved as the great southern Greek theatres, but the historical context — this is where the Macedonian kings staged their spectacles — makes it compelling. It is used occasionally for summer performances.
