The draw is almost entirely archaeological. The Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone is the reason to come, and the Eleusis Archaeological Museum beside it rounds out the visit. The Telesterion, the great initiation hall at the heart of the sanctuary, rewards close attention even in ruin. Walking from the ticket office along the Sacred Way — the same road initiates followed from Athens — gives the site its best sense of scale.
Beyond the ancient, Elefsina's industrial heritage is increasingly worth noting. The old Kronos cement factory and the former shipyard district were central to the 2023 European Capital of Culture programme, with some of the factory buildings repurposed as cultural venues that continue to host events.
