Byzantine Museum of Ioannina

Byzantine and Ottoman silverwork inside the upper citadel

The Byzantine Museum occupies the former Ottoman barracks at the top of the Its Kale citadel. Its collection covers art and everyday life in Epirus from the 4th to the 19th century — icons, vestments, manuscripts, ceramics, jewellery, and a particularly fine selection of post-Byzantine silverwork in a separate Silversmithing Museum in the same complex.

The presentation is good and the rooms not crowded. The combination of museum, citadel views, and the adjoining Fethiye Mosque makes Its Kale the single best half-day in central Ioannina. Closed Tuesdays.
