The Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa sits at the eastern tip of the Kastoria peninsula, directly on the lakeside, and it is without question the most atmospheric place in the city. Founded in the 11th century, the main church and a smaller chapel stand among ancient trees with their reflections in the still water of Lake Orestiada — when the light is right in the morning or evening, it is genuinely beautiful.
The churches are covered inside with Byzantine frescoes, some in good condition, others faded but still readable. Outside, the lakeside wall of the main church carries a large Last Judgement fresco painted on the exterior — an unusual feature in Byzantine architecture. The monastery is still active; there is usually a monk or caretaker in residence.
Getting here requires a 30-minute walk along the eastern shore road from the town centre, or a short drive. The path along the water is pleasant in itself. Go early in the morning to avoid tour groups and to have the best light.
