Paleochori is a long beach on the southeast coast of Milos with a geological curiosity that sets it apart from any other beach in the Cyclades: volcanic hot springs seep up through the sand and into the shallow water along the shoreline. If you sit at the water's edge in the right spot you can feel the warm volcanic water rising around your feet, mixing with the cool sea in pockets of unexpected warmth. The temperature varies along the beach; dig a little into the wet sand near the water line and the heat is even more pronounced.
The beach is a mix of sand and fine gravel and extends for a considerable length, which helps it absorb its visitors without feeling crowded even in summer. A taverna operates on the beach through the main season, which makes it one of the more comfortable full-day options on the island — you can arrive in the morning and stay through lunch without needing to carry much beyond sunscreen. The road from Adamas is fully surfaced and the drive takes around twenty minutes. Paleochori is on the sheltered southern coast, which means it stays calm when the meltemi is making the north coast uncomfortable.
