Syntagma Square — Constitution Square — is the heart of Nafplio's old town and the most historically loaded space in the modern Greek state. It was here, in the Vouleftiko mosque on the east side of the square, that the first Greek parliament met after independence. The first national bank, the first university and the first government printing press all started life within a few hundred metres.
Today it is a wide, paved space ringed by cafes and the Archaeological Museum (on the north side, in a former Venetian arsenal). Tables fill the square from early morning to late at night; the kids' bicycles and football come out at sunset. The Vouleftiko itself is sometimes open for exhibitions.
