Getting There

The gateway to Pelion is Volos, the port city at the base of the peninsula. Volos is connected to Athens by intercity train (about 4 hours) and KTEL bus (3.5 hours). From Volos, local KTEL buses reach the main Pelion villages, but services are infrequent — a car is strongly recommended if you want to explore beyond one or two villages.

By car from Athens, take the E75 motorway north to the Larissa junction, then follow signs to Volos. The drive is about 320 kilometres and takes around 3.5 hours. Volos has car hire agencies at the bus station and in the city centre.

There is no airport on the peninsula. The nearest international airport is Volos Nea Anchialos Airport (VOL), which has limited seasonal connections; most visitors fly into Athens or Thessaloniki and travel by road or rail from there.
