Diagoras International Airport (RHO) is about fourteen kilometres southwest of Rhodes City. Charter flights from northern Europe connect directly during the summer season from May to October; year-round scheduled services operate from Athens (Olympic Air and Aegean) and Thessaloniki. Taxis to the city centre take around twenty minutes and cost €25-30. There is also a regular bus service (KTEL line) connecting the airport with the central bus station in Rhodes City.
By sea, Rhodes is well served from Athens (Piraeus) by Blue Star Ferries — the overnight crossing takes around fourteen hours and is a good way to arrive if you want to see the approach to the harbour in daylight. High-speed catamarans cut the time to around eight hours but sacrifice the pleasure of a proper sea crossing. Rhodes also connects to Kos, Santorini, Crete, and dozens of smaller Dodecanese islands, making it a natural hub for island-hopping. The main ferry port is adjacent to the Old Town, and the harbour approach showing the fortifications and windmills is one of the great arrivals in Greek travel.
