Getting There

Volos is well connected by rail and bus. InterCity trains from Athens take around four and a half hours and run several times daily; the line passes through Larissa, where you can connect to trains from Thessaloniki. The train station is central and walking distance from the seafront. From Thessaloniki, trains also run to Volos via Larissa in under three hours.

Buses (KTEL) connect Volos to Athens in roughly four hours and are a good alternative to the train — cheaper and with a more flexible schedule, though the journey depends on traffic around Athens. There are also KTEL connections to Thessaloniki, Larissa, and other regional centres.

The port is the departure point for ferries to the Sporades islands. Hellenic Seaways and other operators run regular services to Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos, with faster hydrofoil services in summer. The crossing to Skiathos takes about ninety minutes on the regular ferry; the hydrofoil is faster. Services are most frequent from June through September; check schedules outside summer as they thin considerably.

Volos has no commercial airport. The nearest is Nea Anchialos Airport (VOL), about 20km south of the city, which handles a handful of charter and seasonal flights, mainly from northern Europe in summer. Most international visitors will fly to Athens or Thessaloniki and continue by train or bus.
