The city centre is small enough to walk — most of the sights are within ten minutes of Kossuth tér. For the Nagyerdő, take tram line 1 from Piac utca; it makes a one-way loop out through the university campus, past the spa and the stadium, and back into the centre. The single tram line is the easiest piece of public transport to use in Hungary — buy a ticket from the kiosk and validate it on board.
A handful of bus lines fill in the gaps; tickets are sold at newsagents and most bus stops have working ticket machines. Taxis are cheap by Western standards and easy to flag down.
