Széchenyi Square

Széchenyi Square is the main public space in Pécs and the obvious starting point for exploring the city. It is a generous pedestrian square lined with outdoor cafés and presided over by the Mosque of Pasha Qasim — the former Ottoman mosque now used as a Catholic church, whose red-stone dome and minaret stub create an immediately distinctive skyline. The Baroque Trinity Column stands in the centre of the square, and the 18th-century town hall closes off one end.

The square is lively throughout the day and into the evening, with café tables spreading across the paving in good weather. From here, the city's major sights radiate outward: the Cathedral Quarter is uphill to the north, the pedestrian shopping street (Király utca) runs east toward the theatre, and the Ottoman Miner's Mosque lies a few streets to the south. The square repays a leisurely coffee stop before or after exploring the rest of the old town.
