When to Go

Pécs is pleasant to visit from spring through autumn, with May, June, and September being the best months — warm enough for café life on Széchenyi Square, not yet at the peak summer heat. The city is significantly warmer than Budapest and other parts of Hungary, sheltered as it is by the Mecsek hills from the north and benefiting from a mild Pannonian microclimate. This makes it more comfortable than much of Hungary in the shoulder seasons.

Summer (July and August) is the busiest period, with local festivals and cultural events. The city does not get overwhelming numbers of tourists at any time of year — it is far less crowded than Budapest, Eger, or the Lake Balaton resorts. Winter is quiet but mild by Hungarian standards, and the museums are comfortably heated.
