The ruins of Satoraljaujhely Castle sit above town on a wooded hill, giving the city a rougher medieval counterpoint to its main square and museums. Little of the fortress survives in a polished form, but the setting gives it real travel value.
Treat the castle as a walk and viewpoint rather than a restored monument. The climb helps make sense of Satoraljaujhely's position at the edge of the Zemplen hills, with the town, railway, and surrounding wine country below.
