Hellisheiði Geothermal Plant is a working power station on the mountain pass west of Hveragerði. Its visitor exhibition explains how geothermal heat is used for electricity, heating, and hot water in the Reykjavík area.
It is most useful as a short stop if you are driving the Ring Road or already exploring Hveragerði's hot-spring landscape.
