Hveragerði is a small town with a large geological personality. The geothermal field beneath it produces enough heat to grow bananas in greenhouses and bake bread underground. The main draw for visitors is the Reykjadalur valley hike to a hot river — free, spectacular, and genuinely worth the effort.
