The NLFI (National League of Municipalities) Rehabilitation Centre in Hveragerði has used geothermal energy and mineral-rich water for therapeutic treatments since the mid-twentieth century. It draws patients and wellness visitors from across Iceland — the combination of the clean air, the thermal pool complex, and the quiet of a small town away from Reykjavík has made it a respected destination for recovery and rest.
Visitors who are not patients can access the thermal pools during open hours. The pools are fed directly by the geothermal field and maintained at a range of temperatures. It is a different experience from the commercial Blue Lagoon — smaller, quieter, cheaper, and used primarily by Icelanders rather than tourists. The spa facilities are functional rather than luxurious, but the water quality is excellent.
