Kilmurvey Beach is the best beach on Inis Mór — a crescent of white sand on the sheltered north side of the island, protected from the full Atlantic swell by the western headland and with clear, cold water that is swimmable on calm summer days. The beach sits below the village of Kilmurvey, a short distance east of Dún Aonghasa, making it a natural stopping point on the way to or from the fort.
The limestone cliffs frame the beach to the west, and the karst pavement of the island plateau extends to the south. It's rarely crowded even in high summer, because most day visitors to Inis Mór are rushing toward Dún Aonghasa and back. If you have time, sitting on the sand here with a view of Connemara across the water is one of the better uses of an afternoon on the island.
