Teampall Bheanáin

Teampall Bheanáin (Benan's Temple) is a tiny early Christian oratory perched on the highest point of the southern part of Inis Mór, looking out over Killeany Bay and the open Atlantic. It is one of the oldest surviving religious structures on the island, dating from at least the seventh century, and it is remarkably complete given its age and exposure.

The path up from the road near Killeany takes about twenty minutes and crosses the open limestone plateau. The oratory is small enough to seem more like a large stone box than a building, but the craftsmanship of the dry-stone construction — the corbelled arch, the slightly tapering walls — is evident once you examine it closely. The setting, on a high point with 360-degree views over the island and sea, is magnificent.

A story
Teampall Bheanáin is believed to be one of the smallest churches in the world still standing, measuring just 3.5 by 2 metres internally. It is oriented north-south rather than the usual east-west of Christian churches, which has led some scholars to suggest it predates the standardisation of church orientation in Ireland, possibly dating to the fifth or sixth century.
