Kilnaruane Pillar Stone

A weathered eighth-century pillar stone in a quiet hilltop graveyard about a kilometre south-west of the town, carved with one of Ireland's rare depictions of a currach under sail — usually identified as Saint Brendan setting out on his Atlantic voyage. Other panels show interlaced patterns, a man with a praying figure, and a scene that may be Saints Anthony and Paul breaking bread in the desert.

It is a National Monument but receives few visitors. The setting — a small enclosure with views over Bantry Bay — is half the reason to come. Follow signs from the N71 just south of the town; the last stretch is a narrow boreen.
