The Peak

The Peak is the wave that put Bundoran on the surfing map. A reef break over a shallow rock ledge, it produces long, powerful right-handers that can reach three to four metres on a good Atlantic swell. It is not a wave for beginners — the combination of power, shallow reef, and strong rip currents demands experience — but for competent surfers it is one of the finest waves in Europe.

The best conditions come with northwest swells from October through March, with clean offshore winds and long rides into the channel. The break is visible from the shore walk and has a loyal local surf community that has developed around it over decades. International competitions have been held here, and the wave's reputation draws visiting surfers from as far as Australia and California.

A story
The Peak is a right-hand reef break that breaks over a submerged rock shelf about 200 metres offshore. At full size it produces long, powerful barrels — the kind of wave that ends careers or starts legends. The break has hosted major international surf competitions and is regarded by professional surfers as one of the most technically demanding waves in Europe.
