Bundoran sits at the southern tip of County Donegal, where the Atlantic hammers the coast with some of the best surf breaks in Europe. The town curves along the shoreline — rough, ragged, and silver — with Ben Bulben and the Dartry Mountains as a backdrop and Donegal Bay stretching out to the north.
Surfing is the main draw. The Peak, a reef break just offshore, hosts international competitions and draws experienced surfers from around the world. Beginners can learn at the Donegal Adventure Centre, though be warned — once you have ridden Bundoran's waves, everywhere else may feel tame. September and October bring the biggest swells.
The coastal walk at Roguey is worth the detour, passing fairy bridges (natural blow-holes in the rock) and a wishing chair carved into the stone. At the end, the sculpture "Carraig na nÉan" (Rock of the Birds) frames the Peak through a perforated sandstone monolith — catch it at sunset if you can.
Bundoran has long been a holiday town for visitors from Northern Ireland, with B&Bs, self-catering apartments, and hotels for all budgets. The pub scene is lively and unpretentious.
