The Garden of Remembrance is a formal garden on Parnell Square dedicated to all those who died in the cause of Irish freedom. It was designed by Dáithí Hanly and opened in 1966 to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. The centrepiece is Oisín Kelly's dramatic bronze sculpture of the Children of Lir, the figures transforming from children to swans — a reference to the ancient Irish myth.
The garden is built on the site where Irish rebels were held overnight before being transported to Kilmainham Gaol following the 1916 Rising. It's a moving and well-designed space, particularly in the evening light.
