Clare Abbey

Ruined Augustinian abbey just outside Ennis, set in quiet fields by the River Fergus

Clare Abbey is a roofless Augustinian ruin south of Ennis, close enough to town for a short detour but far enough to feel properly rural. The surviving church, tower, and cloister fragments stand in open ground near the River Fergus.

It is an unguided site, so bring a little context or simply enjoy the quiet. The abbey works well as a low-key historical stop before heading into the Burren or west toward the coast, especially if you like ruins without ticket desks and crowds.
