Kinsale Harbour is a sheltered inlet where the River Bandon meets the sea, and it has been the town's reason for existing since before recorded history. Today fishing boats, sailing yachts, and the occasional tall ship share the water, and the harbour front has been redeveloped with restaurants and a promenade without losing its working character. Seals are sometimes seen on the rocks near the entrance.
Harbour Cruises runs trips from the quayside that pass Scilly village, the two forts, and the outer headlands — a good way to understand the geography. Whale watching trips run from spring through autumn; humpback whales are occasionally seen offshore, and minke whales are more regular. Deep-sea fishing charters are available for those who want to try the waters rather than just look at them.
