Moore's Traditional Curers has been smoking herring at Peel since 1882, making it one of the last traditional kipper smokehouses still operating in the British Isles. The business uses traditional cold-smoking methods over oak chips, producing kippers with a distinctive flavour and pale colour that Manx aficionados insist is superior to anything produced on the mainland. You can buy kippers directly from the shop and have them vacuum-packed for travelling.
The smokehouse itself can sometimes be viewed, and when the kilns are active you can smell the process from the street. Peel kippers are considered the island's signature food product and make a good, distinctive souvenir. The nearby harbour area has a few other food producers and a small fish market that operates when the boats are in.
