Campo Imperatore

Campo Imperatore is the immense high plateau on the southern side of Gran Sasso, often nicknamed Italy's little Tibet. The name is overused, but the comparison makes sense when the road opens onto a treeless basin of grass, rock, wind, and distant ridges.

It is the main southern access point for hikes toward Corno Grande and for winter skiing when conditions allow. Even if you are not hiking, the drive is worth it in clear weather; bring warm layers, because the plateau rarely feels as gentle as the valleys below.

A story
In 1943 Benito Mussolini was held at the Hotel Campo Imperatore after his fall from power. German commandos landed gliders on the plateau and freed him in the Gran Sasso raid, a spectacular operation that turned this lonely high basin into a footnote in world history.
