Corno Grande

Corno Grande is the highest summit of the Gran Sasso massif and the highest point in the Apennines. The normal approaches from Campo Imperatore are popular in summer, but this is still a real mountain route with steep ground, loose rock, and fast-changing weather.

Experienced hikers will find it one of the best days in Abruzzo. Casual walkers should enjoy the lower trails and viewpoints instead, or go with a guide. The mountain is close to roads and cable cars, but it is not domesticated.

A story
Corno Grande is the highest point in the Apennines, which makes its summit feel like the roof of central Italy. On a clear day the view takes in the Adriatic to one side and a huge sweep of inland mountains to the other, a reminder that Abruzzo is far wilder than most first-time visitors expect.
