Pescasseroli and the surrounding national park are appealing in two distinct seasons. Summer (June–September) is the classic hiking period: the meadows are at their best, wildflowers cover the valley floors, and the bears are active — your best chance of a sighting. July and August bring the most visitors, but the park is large enough that you can find quiet trails even in peak season.
Winter (December–March) transforms the area into a low-key cross-country skiing destination. The slopes above town are modest but uncrowded, and the village acquires a peaceful quality that summer visitors miss entirely.
Shoulder seasons (April–May and October–November) are good for walking with fewer people. Spring brings the best chance of seeing newborn Apennine chamois; autumn offers dramatic light and often excellent weather.
