Teramo sits between the mountains and the sea, and the best of the province lies just outside the city. The obvious trip is up into Gran Sasso, the highest massif in the Apennines, which rises directly south of the city and forms its natural hinterland. From Teramo the road climbs to Prati di Tivo in under an hour, with chairlifts up to the walking trails below Corno Piccolo and Corno Grande and long views back over the Adriatic. A car makes the mountains far easier to reach.
The coast is the other direction worth taking: the beaches around Pineto and the pinewoods of the Costa dei Trabocchi are about half an hour east. Together the mountains and the sea make Teramo a comfortable base for exploring the whole of northern Abruzzo.
