Pineto

Adriatic beach resort in Abruzzo, named for pine woods backing its protected sandy coast

Pineto is a beach resort on the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo, about 40 km south of Pescara in the province of Teramo. It takes its name from the pine woods that back the beach — planted in their thousands in the 1920s — and the coastline holds a Blue Flag designation for water quality and services.

Just outside town stands the Torre di Cerrano, a well-preserved 16th-century coastal watchtower built by Charles V to guard against Ottoman raids. It now serves as the headquarters of the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area — one of the few protected marine zones on the Adriatic, with clear water and good snorkelling. The beach and pine forest park stretches along the seafront, with shaded cycling and walking paths that make it pleasant even outside swimming season.

Pineto is a popular summer destination for Italian families. The Gran Sasso massif is visible from the beach on clear days, a reminder that you are in one of the greenest and least touristy corners of Italy.

Beaches

Pineto's beach runs for several kilometres, backed by the pine forest that gives the town its name. The sand is fine and the water generally clear, with Blue Flag status recognising consistent water quality. The beach is divided between private lidos (with sunbeds, parasols, and bar service) and free public sections.

South of town, near the Torre di Cerrano, the beach enters the edge of the marine protected area where the water is noticeably cleaner and snorkelling is worth doing. The area around the tower is the least developed and most pleasant stretch. North of the centre the beach merges into the neighbouring resort of Silvi Marina.

Things to Do

Pineto is an uncomplicated beach town: the Adriatic, a pine forest, a medieval watchtower, and clear water. Most visitors come in July and August to swim; the rest of the year it is quiet but never dull if you like a beach with good views of the Gran Sasso massif behind the coast.
