Most of Agropoli's character is concentrated in the old town on the promontory — the medieval castle, the narrow lanes, and the views over the sea. The lower town and beach area are functional and pleasant for a seaside afternoon, but the upper town is where the history is.
The Castello Angioino-Aragonese dominates the hilltop and is free to enter. From its walls you get the best view of the coastline stretching south toward the Cilento. The small marina below has fishing boats and a handful of restaurants serving freshly caught fish.
Agropoli's real draw for most visitors, though, is its position as a base for the Cilento National Park and the nearby Paestum temples.
