La Piazzetta is tiny — four cafés, a clock tower, and a church facade surround a terrace barely larger than a living room — but it carries a disproportionate sense of occasion. Sitting here with an overpriced coffee while the world passes through is one of the pleasures of Capri, regardless of how self-conscious it sounds. The terrace faces south across the rooftops toward the sea.
The square sits at the top of the funicular from Marina Grande and is the hub of Capri town. Everything radiates from here: the lanes to the Gardens of Augustus, the path to Villa Jovis, the shopping street via Camerelle, and the cliff walk down to the Faraglioni. Arrive by the 8am funicular and you have the Piazzetta almost to yourself; arrive at 11am in August and it is a sea of day-trippers. The cafés are expensive by any measure, but the location is the thing.
