Pozzuoli has excellent seafood and a lively fish market near the port. The town is considerably less expensive than Naples and rather more authentic in its eating options — this is a real working port, not a tourist city, and the restaurants around the lungomare (seafront promenade) serve fresh catches with less fuss and lower prices than you would find in the city. Look for zuppa di pesce (fish soup), frittura di paranza (mixed fried small fish), and pasta with clams or mussels from the volcanic coast. The Lucrino lagoon nearby has been producing shellfish since Roman times.
