Chapter House and Refectory

Tucked behind the church are the chapter house and refectory, both lined with frescoes and easy to skip if you do not know they are there — make sure you do not. The chapter house, where the monks met daily, was painted around 1320 by an unknown Bolognese master with a Crucifixion and standing saints. The refectory, the monks' dining room, contains a Last Supper and a remarkable depiction of Christ in benediction painted directly above the abbot's seat.

The two rooms together are a quiet, atmospheric counterpart to the much brighter church. Light filters in through the small windows, and the brick floors and bare furniture give a sense of how stripped-down monastic life actually was. They are included in the standard ticket.
