The abbey lies on the SS309 Romea, the old coast road between Venice and Ravenna, about 50 km north of Ravenna and 50 km east of Ferrara. It is signed from the main road and has its own car park. Without a car you are out of luck most of the year — local buses from Codigoro and Ferrara serve the abbey infrequently and journeys involve at least one change. Many visitors combine Pomposa with a swim or seafood lunch at Comacchio or its beaches to the south, or with the medieval town of Mesola and the Po di Volano further north.
